Jenné Claiborne of Sweet Potato Soul
Putting a Fun and Creative Twist on Veganism

AFIYA May June 2016Born and raised in Atlanta, Jenné Claiborne grew up in a household amongst those who enjoyed to cook. With a father and grandmother who were cooks, Jenné started cooking while spending time in the kitchen with her loved ones. At a young age, she received a cookbook from her mother and would tag along for grocery shopping trips to select the groceries and cook dinner a couple nights out of the week. After a short hiatus from cooking while in high school, it was the start of a new chapter in her life that allowed Jenné to tap back into her love for creating new meals. While attending Boston University for acting, Jenné became interested in cleaning up her eating habits and choosing healthier meals that would help her success as an actress. In an effort to still eat the foods she loved without feeling guilty, she began to expand her horizons when it came to selecting different foods, cooking new meals and tracking her food intake. From there, it took off and quickly morphed from a need to control body image to an activity that brought herR29_Jenne joy.

Over time, Jenné’s love for cooking led to the creation of her now well-known and thriving vegan food blog, Sweet Potato Soul. Named after her love for sweet potatoes, her grandmother’s soul food, and her desire to create soul-stirring, inspiring meals filled with love, Sweet Potato Soul contains a variety of healthy vegan recipes, cooking videos and health tips to support those who are looking to lead a healthier lifestyle through diet. Jenné sat down with AFIYA Magazine to talk about the story behind Sweet Potato Soul, how a vegan lifestyle has helped her, and how we can all make the switch towards leading a healthier lifestyle–vegan or not.
