Nurturing the Spirit of Holistic Living & Healthy Families

“If I am in harmony with my family, that’s success.” This short and simple Ute proverb holds such a strong meaning as it relates to building and strengthening a family unit and is an idea that must be carried within all those whom are looking to add more vitality and value within their growing family structure. It’s with this idea in mind that Trishay [Yata] Burton, a graduate of Florida A&M University, has used to help fellow parents and families build their growing family.
In 2015, Yata, a Tallahassee native, along with her husband Brent Burton, who is from Los Angeles, California, made the decision to create a business dedicated to promoting, nurturing and protecting the idea of holistic living and healthy families. At 27 years old, Yata, also a mother of one, combined her extensive knowledge of hair and skin care with her personal experiences with veganism and a natural birthing process to create Nurturology and Melanin Babies. Through these businesses, Yata and her husband Brent, make an effort to not only provide quality skin and hair care products for African-Americans, but also to enlighten new and expecting parents on how they can build and maintain a healthy family unit.
Rashida: Thank you so much for taking the time to speak with AFIYA Magazine. We’d love to know how your businesses Nurturology and Melanin Babies come to be.
Yata: Absolutely and thank you! Originally, the business was going to be called ‘Naturology’, but the name was taken. However, it turned out well because after I was married and while pregnant, the word ‘nurture’ came to me, meaning to care for or encourage the growth and development in someone or something and ‘nuturology’ is the study of encouraging the growth and development in people. So whether it’s regarding hair, teaching others how to serve through nurturing or how to care for their body in other holistic ways, that’s what we teach. That’s also how Melanin Babies was born. Through Melanin Babies we offer organic plant-based baby products, information about safe and natural pregnancy and birthing and resources on healthy motherhood and parenting.
